TARMAC NATIONAL CONTRACTING WIN NATIONAL AWARD

Tarmac National Contracting, the leading national road surfacing and civil engineering company, has scooped a 2006 Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Award for its work on the A1 Bowes Incline contract.

Judges were impressed by Tarmac's responsible and respectful approach to the community as the team worked closely with residents, providing a customer liaison officer with a 24-hour contact number and attending meetings with local residents and businesses.

The CCS aims to praise constructors who are safe, environmentally conscious, responsible, accountable and respectful while the scheme's monitors inspect the sites concerned. The criteria is based upon an important initiative called the Code of Considerate Practice.

The A1 Bowes Incline contract saw Tarmac remove over 7,500 tonnes of recycled bituminous asphalt which was then made into Foam-mix and used on another scheme at Scotwoods Road in Newcastle.

David Newton, Tarmac's general manager for contracting in the North East and Cumbria, comments: "We're delighted to have been recognised as a considerate contractor. The team working on the A1 were always safety conscious and Tarmac did everything possible to ensure the local community were undisturbed.

"Noise reduction was a vital part of this contract and not just on the finished road surface. To ensure compliance with acceptable noise levels we even drove the sweeper half a mile down the road to make a three point turn instead of causing disruption through the reversing noise on our vehicles."

The asphalt was supplied at night to minimise traffic disruption and the traffic management system was installed to work when vehicle count drops below 85 vehicles in a three minute period. This system includes a contraflow installation being set up every night to manage the traffic and returned to normal before 6am each weekday and 9am on a weekend. Tarmac used 400 temporary signs to assist road closures, diversion routes, the contraflow installation and lane closures which facilitated several other maintenance works and prevented the need for future lane closures which ultimately is a better deal for the road user.

The award is presented to only the top 7.5% of sites inspected.
