MP OPENS BRAND NEW NOTTINGHAMSHIRE CYCLE ROUTE
CYCLING enthusiasts can now try out a fantastic new route in Nottinghamshire, thanks to a partnership between Tarmac, charity Sustrans, Nottinghamshire County Council and Cambridge University's Trinity College.
The Newark to Harby route, to be officially opened by Patrick Mercer MP on Friday 17 February, is part of the growing National Cycle Network, created by the charity Sustrans, and planned and agreed with Tarmac in 2003. The two-and-a-half kilometre route not only passes along the public right of way at the company's Langford Quarry, but also uses sand and gravel from the site.
"Safety is a priority for us and we've ensured there is suitable signage and self-closing gates added to the route and so we're happy with this development," said Tarmac senior estates surveyor Neil Beards. "The route passes through a really good site, and I'm sure it will be well used and well loved by cyclists, especially as part is reserved for the RSPB. Over the next nine years it will be restored, creating a reed wetland."
"The use of local products adds a nice touch and we made a specific effort to give it a local feel," said Sustrans' regional officer Nicola Jones. "It looks good, especially as it changes colour in different weather conditions."
"Tarmac has been very supportive," added Nicola. "And now we have a really quiet route - an alternative to the local busy road and railway crossing."
