18th October 2006 - CROWN FARM QUARRY OPEN DAY ROCKS!

Tarmac's Crown Farm Quarry Open Day last Saturday (14 October) was a fantastic success and attracted more than 300 visitors.

The fun day was hosted by Tarmac on behalf of Cheshire County Council led Sandstone Ridge ECOnet Partnership (SREP) and was enjoyed by adults and children alike.

John Bradshaw, Tarmac northwest estates manager, said: "We were really surprised by the number of visitors, but it is very encouraging that so many people are interested in quarrying."

"Many people think that quarrying is just about taking aggregates (stone, sand and gravel) out of the ground, but we were able to show visitors the uses for aggregates and also the great work that Tarmac does for the environment and the local community."

"Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the activities on the day which included falconry, side saddle horse riding, basket weaving and fossil making. The demand for the 4x4 safari's of Crown Farm Quarry and local SREP projects was so high we had to lay on extra vehicles."

Steve Wilkinson, Cheshire County Councillor and SREP Chairman, said: "I am really pleased that the fun day was so busy and that everyone enjoyed themselves."

"The heathland that Tarmac is recreating at Crown Farm Quarry will take shape over many years and have a lasting impact on everyone who lives, works and visits the area as with the many other projects in which SREP is involved while working with local communities."

The local Women’s Institute also provided refreshments and cakes.
