NEW NHBC GUIDANCE ON BEAM AND BLOCK FLOORING

ADVICE AND SOLUTIONS TO COMPLY WITH NEW NHBC GUIDANCE ON STRUCTURAL TOPPINGS FOR BEAM AND BLOCK SUSPENDED FLOORING

Introduction

NHBC Technical Extra October 2014 issued new guidance and good practice on toppings for suspended beam and block concrete floors in house construction.

What has changed?

The new guidance stated that where an in-situ concrete topping is required to perform the function of a structural screed, micro synthetic fibres are no longer permitted as reinforcement.

The only permitted alternatives to welded steel mesh reinforcement are:

• Approved polypropylene macro fibres
• Approved steel fibres

The new guidance can be found on the NHBC website

When will this take effect?

A transition period was put in place for the industry to adapt to this new guidance, with the changes to be implemented from 1 January 2018.

Tarmac involvement

Since this announcement, Tarmac have been working with our industry partners to help with the transition.

Our involvement has helped generate a better understanding within the industry and the working group stakeholders (or members) about the versatility of self compacting concrete with secondary reinforcement in the structural toppings.

Tarmac’s product support managers also facilitated the validation testing of the performance of the self compacting concrete with a leading flooring system supplier while also working very closely with the two fibre suppliers listed within the BBA certification.

This has also included contributing to the following guide, available to download from the British Precast Flooring Federation website: “Application Guide for the Specification and Installation of Concrete Toppings to Beam & EPS Block Suspended Floors”

Tarmac's NHBC compliant products

Tarmac have developed two bespoke concrete solutions for the application – for details see the document below:
