Tarmac help clean up local school

Volunteers from Tarmac’s contracting team based in Bellshill have donated their time at Wester Overton Primary School in Strathaven, to help improve the school’s playground.

The team tidied up the area by gardening, clearing large patches of weeds, and painting and preparing planters for the children. 18 tonnes of spoil was cleared from the playground, thanks to generous donations and a collaborative effort from partner suppliers SJB Contracts, who provided fresh soil and a truck and Cleehill Plant Hire, who loaned a small excavator.

Linda Mitchell, senior administrator for Tarmac’s contracting team, who organised the clear up, said: “We had great day working together as one team to help a local school in need of assistance. This was our first volunteering activity as part of the community involvement programme, but we’ll definitely be looking to do more.”

The day of volunteering helps the sustainable construction solutions company build towards one of its sustainability targets of completing 50,000 volunteering hours per year by 2020. The company have a central sponsorship and donations scheme which frequently sees employees taking time out to volunteer in communities local to their sites.

Mandy Thompson, head teacher at Wester Overton Primary School, said: “A massive thank you to Tarmac for organising all of the work -  we’re so impressed and thankful. It’s great to see a company who are so prominent in the area communicating and engaging with their local community.”
