Achieving the efficiency savings called for in the McNulty report whilst continuing to upgrade and renew the UK’s rail infrastructure to meet the demands of passenger and freight growth is one of the biggest challenges the rail industry has ever faced. Having supported our rail partners for over 90 years we understand these challenges and are actively engaged in collaborative research projects designed to deliver the next generation of innovative rail infrastructure.

Today we supply a range of essential construction solutions to support the maintenance and repair of assets including aggregates for rail ballast, asphalt for car parks, slip roads and pedestrian areas, and specialist concretes for the construction and repair of platforms, good yards, tunnels and bridges. Tomorrow’s solutions will be the result of even bigger thinking.

In meeting partner requirements we ensure that they can be delivered safely and achieve efficiencies – whether that be carbon reduction, quicker handover times, reduced labour. At London Underground’s Ruislip ballast transfer facility we replaced a 4200m2 slab in two phases while the yard was fully operational. The slab was installed incident free and the design of the material offered both early strength and high abrasion resistance.
Continuous Improvement We offer a complete service from value engineering, programme planning and logistics management, to the design, manufacture and placement of bespoke products to meet individual specifications. All of our operations are committed to increasing efficiency and reducing waste through the ongoing implementation of LEAN continuous improvement procedures.
Digital railway The rail industry’s ‘Rail Technical Strategy’, a 30-year vision of technology requirements, prioritises improvements in use of data and information and their translation into systems and services that cut cost, improve operations and benefit customers. To this end, we are actively engaged in providing information for Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems, as well as research and development of innovative new uses of materials to deliver the solutions that will support these ambitions.

Ruislip Ballast Yard

Replacement of a badly worn concrete slab at the ballast transfer facility needed to be completed with the site fully operational throughout. Using the specialist concrete Toproc  the new slab was able to be trafficked early minimising client and programme works. Focused on sustainable impacts we were also able to remove and crush the previous slab, using it as sub base to reduce material costs and the need for new aggregate.
