Tarmac welcomes four new apprentices in Knowsley

Four young people from Knowsley have started their apprenticeships with Tarmac.

The Operations Apprentices who live in Huyton, Kirkby and Prescot are aged 19-21. They will be based at the Knowsley Borough Council’s Stretton Way depot in Huyton and will work as part of the Tarmac team delivering highways surfacing, bridge and structures maintenance, gully cleansing as well as footway and carriageway repairs across Knowsley.

During the two year apprenticeship, Greg, Jack, Craig and Thomas will study towards a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services with a focus on Construction Operations and General Construction.

Paul Fleetham, managing director, Tarmac Contracting, said: “We’re passionate about this industry, and want to inspire young people to start successful careers in construction. Our apprenticeships offer a great opportunity to gain a nationally-recognised qualification at the same time as developing practical experience and earning a wage. I’m really pleased to welcome our four new recruits and wish them every success.”

Cllr Mike Murphy, Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic development said: “I was delighted to meet the new Tarmac apprentices on their first day of work. Knowsley’s highway is one of the council’s most valuable assets so I think it’s great that we have local people working on the maintenance of our roads and footpaths. I wish the apprentices the very best of luck in their new careers.”

Tarmac was awarded a five year, £30 million Highways Maintenance contract by Knowsley Borough Council, which started on 1 February 2016.  As part of the contract, a number of apprenticeships have been created by Tarmac as a commitment to creating local jobs and bringing young people into construction.
