Tarmac drives away with MPA Transport Initiative Award

Last week marked a successful day at the Mineral Products Association (MPA) annual Health and Safety Awards for Tarmac. The day explored the critical role that inspirational and effective leadership plays in achieving zero harm in the workplace, and was attended by 285 delegates, representing 62 different organisations.

Nigel Jackson, MPA’s Chief Executive said: “The MPA Health & Safety committee agreed to focus on the crucial role leadership needs to play if we are to achieve our common goal of zero harm. The combined effort of the companies in MPA across its 12 product groups represents the most powerful opportunity to deliver change on the ground in this industry and the most powerful factor in that process is leadership.”

Tarmac won the Transport Initiatives Award for improving the vehicle and pedestrian movement plan at its Glasgow Dry Silo Mortar plant. The team’s submission was focused on the challenge of increasing onsite capacity and so traffic, and ways to reducing risk. Risk identification processes including site walks and hazard spotting helped Tarmac develop a new movement plan to reduce the risk of an accident.

Adam Green, Tarmac’s senior operations manager for UK mortars and screeds, said: “We’re delighted to be recognised for the ideas we’ve implemented in an attempt to work to our target of zero harm. The health and safety of our employees is the primary focus for us as a business and winning this award as a great way of showing our employees that our good work is being recognised and rewarded.”

The company was also "Highly Commended" for its ongoing work on a number of projects in different parts of the business. Contractor engagement was one area of focus, with employees demonstrating a commitment that has resulted in improved contractor safety in Tarmac’s Marine business. A new process of contractor forums and knowledge sharing exercises has been implemented within the team’s supply chain. Also acknowledged was work on an engineered process for automatically measuring block heights and reducing operator access to moving machinery.
