Tarmac shortlisted for five Highways England accolades

Tarmac is celebrating after being shortlisted for five categories in two national industry award schemes run by Highways England. The nominations recognise the company’s achievements in delivering innovation, supply chain collaboration and an ongoing commitment to health and safety best practice.

The company will compete for two titles in the government-owned company’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing Awards, as well as three accolades in the Supplier Recognition Scheme, which highlights the contributions made by Highways England suppliers who help to operate, maintain and improve the strategic road network.

Paul Fleetham, managing director of Tarmac’s Contracting business, said: “It’s great news that some of our best collaborative projects have been recognised in both Highways Englandaward schemes.

“Being shortlisted in five categories is a credit to the hard work and dedication of our teams of highways experts, whose commitment to collaboration and delivering best practice across the supply chain continues to produce impressive results.  We are exceptionally proud of everyone involved and wish them all the best of luck.”

In its two Health, Safety and Wellbeing Awards nominations, Tarmac is shortlisted for ‘Excellence in Health and Safety Performance’ for its innovative approach to managing vehicle speed on the A42, which delivered a significant decrease in hazardous vehicle-worker interactions. The company’s second shortlisting is for ‘Project of the Year’, recognising its work on the Darrington to Dishforth stretch of the A1(M) that implemented strategies to foster positive cultural changes.

In the Supplier Recognition Scheme, Tarmac’s collaboration with Costain and Jacobs to embed sustainability in the design and delivery of works on the A160 to Port Immingham scheme has secured its place on the final list for the ‘Delivering Sustainable and Environmental Solutions’ award.

The company’s work with A-One+ on the A64 obtained a nomination in the ‘Innovations’ category for the use of its high-friction asphalt Ultigrip.  Another joint entry with Highways England, Hanson and Aggregate Industries saw collective work on collaboration through the Category Management Pavement Community acquiring a third shortlisting in the ‘Efficiencies & Continuous Improvement' category.

The winners of the Highways Englandaward schemes will be announced at two separate events, with the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Awards ceremony held in London on Wednesday 7th March and the Supplier RecognitionScheme results revealed on Tuesday 20th March in Manchester.
