Future Plans

Panshanger Park

Long term management plans

Tarmac works closely with Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and Hertfordshire County Council as part of the legally constituted Management Committee for Panshanger Park. We also work with other stakeholders to deliver a new management plan for a working parkland, open to the public via permissive paths and open space, maintained for wildlife and future generations through practical and active site management.

Please check back to this section for further information on our future plans as the new management plan develops.

Panshanger Park Management Plan

Tarmac is working with consultants Chris Blandford Associates to produce a park management plan for Panshanger Park, in partnership with Natural England, Historic England and Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

Part funded by Natural England, the parkland management plan will draw together information on the park’s history, consider the current use and land management of the site, identify sensitivities such as habitats, woodlands and heritage assets, and make recommendations for future management and use.

In 2021, we will be conducting a range of specialist surveys to build a picture of the park's history, its significance today, and opportunities for the future. Once the surveys have taken place, further work will be done to analyses the results, identify opportunities and make recommendations on the future of the park.

The plan will consolidate the information we already have on the park, providing a holistic review of the current use and sensitivities to scope out how the park could be enhanced even further for nature and visitors.

New Car Park Proposals

We have submitted a planning application for the creation of a new car park together with the provision of toilets and mobile catering facilities on the Western side of the park. These proposals will improve access to the park and provide better facilities for our growing number of visitors to enjoy the stunning landscape and wildlife of Panshanger Park. The drawings from the application are available to view below.

The plans have been carefully designed to:

  • Protect historic landscape views.
  • Include significant new planting and habitat enhancement which will deliver a 131% biodiversity net gain.
  • Provide a good setting off point for anyone wanting to walk to the Great Oak and Orangery, into the Mimram valley and south to the Cole Green landscape.
  • Utilise an existing access point, meaning there will be no need to create new entrances or access roads.
  • Facilitate access for buses and coaches and provide secure cycle storage.
  • Utilise natural materials and be in keeping with the parks surroundings.

Further technical studies and supporting information is available to view on the Hertfordshire County Council website and the application open to public consultation online until the 14th May 2021 (Reference number PL/0202/21)
