Tarmac has appointed Mick Stovin as General Manager – Industrial Minerals within its Circularity team, strengthening the company’s focus on resource efficiency, value creation and the use of recycled and secondary materials across its operations.
In his new role, Mick will lead the development and delivery of Tarmac’s industrial minerals strategy, with a clear remit to maximise the value of materials already within the business and to reduce reliance on externally sourced virgin products. A key focus will be on increasing the internal supply of low carbon, recycled and secondary minerals for use across Tarmac’s asphalt, construction and industrial applications.
Mick brings more than four decades of experience across industrial minerals, building products, logistics and agriculture. He has held senior commercial and leadership roles across the UK and Europe, most recently as European Commercial Director at LKAB Minerals, and has worked extensively across mineral extraction, processing, logistics and specialist industrial applications. He also previously ran his own logistics and minerals consultancy.
Within Tarmac, Mick’s role will support the company’s wider circular economy ambitions by identifying opportunities to internalise material supply chains, valorise secondary materials and introduce recycled products into new industrial markets. This includes increasing the use of recycled asphalt fillers, expanding the use of accredited recycled materials to replace virgin minerals, and supporting the development of new circular product offerings for both internal use and external customers.
Mick is also Chairman of the British Calcium Carbonate Federation and the Agricultural Lime Association, and sits on the Mineral Products Association Council. In these roles, he will represent Tarmac across key industry bodies, helping to shape conversations around sustainable mineral use, standards and best practice.
Mick Stovin, General Manager – Industrial Minerals, said: “Tarmac has a real opportunity to unlock significantly more value from the materials it already produces and handles, while reducing carbon impact at the same time. My role is about looking at minerals differently – recognising their true value, keeping materials in use for longer, and finding smarter, lower-carbon ways to supply both our own operations and wider industrial markets. It’s an exciting challenge and one that aligns perfectly with Tarmac’s circularity ambitions.”
Steve Birch, Circularity Director at Tarmac, added: “Mick brings an exceptional depth of knowledge across industrial minerals, logistics and circular material use. His experience and industry leadership will be invaluable as we continue to embed circular principles across the business, reduce our reliance on virgin materials and create higher-value, lower-carbon solutions. We’re really pleased to welcome him to the Circularity team.”
