Tarmac, the UK’s leading supplier of sustainable construction and building materials, has launched a new Logistics Academy designed to support the development of colleagues at every stage of their logistics career, from new starters entering the sector to experienced professionals preparing for leadership roles.
The Tarmac Logistics Academy provides a structured training and development framework that brings together onboarding, apprenticeships, digital learning and leadership programmes into a single, clearly defined pathway. The initiative aims to build capability across Tarmac’s logistics network while creating long-term career opportunities for employees working within the function.
Developed in partnership with The National Logistics Academy, the programme offers nationally recognised apprenticeships alongside practical, on-the-job experience. The collaboration ensures learners benefit from direct access to experts, industry-recognised qualifications and programmes that reflect the evolving needs of the logistics sector.
For new starters, the academy introduces a structured four-week onboarding programme designed to support a smooth transition into the business. This includes safety and compliance training, IT and systems familiarisation, site visits and job shadowing across logistics teams.
As part of the academy, there are two apprenticeship routes delivered with The National Logistics Academy. The Level 2 Traffic Office Apprenticeship provides an eight-month programme covering the fundamentals of transport operations, building the confidence and knowledge to work in a fast-moving environment through four stages of development – Survive, Strive, Thrive and Excel. The Level 3 Transport Manager Apprenticeship supports people to achieve a qualification in the Transport Manager CPC, setting them up to be leaders in transport through a series of specialist masterclasses covering operations, licensing, safe loading and leadership.
The academy also incorporates a logistics skills matrix and a suite of e-learning modules to help colleagues build capability in areas such as safety, compliance, sustainability and wider corporate requirements. Together with leadership development programmes, including Apollo and Front-Line Leadership, the academy creates a clear and transparent development pipeline for logistics professionals within the business.
Sam Currie, Commercial Director at The National Logistics Academy, said: “We’re really pleased to be partnering with Tarmac on the launch of the Tarmac Logistics Academy. Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing the next generation of logistics professionals, and this programme provides employees with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed, whether they are starting their journey in the sector or progressing towards leadership roles.”
Dan Whiley, National Logistics Optimisation and Development Manager at Tarmac, said: “The launch of the Tarmac Logistics Academy marks an important step forward in how we support the development of our logistics colleagues. By bringing together structured onboarding, apprenticeships and leadership development, we are creating a clear pathway for people to build long-term careers within our business. Whether someone is joining us as a new starter or preparing for a future leadership role, the academy ensures they have the skills, knowledge and support they need to thrive.”
