Tarmac Mortars accelerates carbon reduction strategy with shift to Dry Silo Solutions

January 26, 2026

Tarmac Mortars has announced a strategic shift in its manufacturing operations as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction across the construction materials sector.

From January 2026, Tarmac will cease ready-to-use (RTU) mortar production at its Derby, Leeds and Manchester facilities, marking a decisive move away from traditional mortar solutions that are no longer aligned with modern sustainability expectations. Screed operations in the South East, including Sevenoaks and Harper Lane, will continue as usual.

The decision reflects growing industry recognition that RTU mortars carry inherent environmental challenges, including higher material wastage, intensive transport requirements and increased carbon impact. By contrast, dry silo mortar systems offer a more efficient, lower-waste and lower-carbon alternative.

Tarmac is now actively supporting customers in transitioning to dry silo mortar solutions, helping them reduce site waste, improve productivity and cut embodied carbon while maintaining the performance and consistency required on today’s construction projects.

This move positions Tarmac at the forefront of carbon reduction within mortar manufacturing, reinforcing its role as an industry leader driving practical, scalable change.

Iain Betts, Commercial Director at Tarmac Mortars, said: “Sustainability demands action, not statements. Moving away from traditional RTU mortar is the right decision for our customers, our business and the wider construction industry. Dry silo mortar provides a smarter, more efficient and significantly lower-carbon solution, and we are proud to be leading this transition at scale.”
