Nuclear ready: proven, tested, consistent

Delivering consistent, repeatable and traceable quality materials
from source to site is vital at every stage of nuclear delivery.

A critical infrastructure partner

Tarmac operates at the forefront of national critical infrastructure.

We bring more than 120 years of working on the UK’s most significant projects together with an expert understanding of the exacting requirements of delivering in the nuclear environment.

We have worked extensively in the nuclear sector, providing surety of materials supply to Licensed Nuclear Sites including Sellafield, Hinkley Point C, AWE Burghfield, Urenco Capenhurst, Devonport and Faslane Naval Base.

Our parent company, CRH, brings global nuclear supply experience from projects internationally in the US and in Europe.

From source to site – the traceability
required for nuclear ready concrete

At Tarmac, we recognise that the supply of concrete and associated construction materials is central to the critical path of new build nuclear projects. Delivering consistent and traceable quality constituent materials from source to site is vital at every stage of the project’s lifecycle to provide the assurance which underpins the long-term life of the facility.

Tarmac understands of the technical performance requirements for nuclear construction materials and can provide advice to clients including reviewing the geological data at quarries to blasting, crushing, screening and washing of the aggregates.

We can provide complete logistical supply solutions by road, rail and sea, which recognise the challenges associated with delivery to nuclear construction programs, minimising impacts on local communities and providing low carbon options, whilst also providing customer with assurances of supply so as not to interrupt construction programs through the resilience the Tarmac business offers.

We work with client to develop, demonstrate and verify mixes for nuclear grade concrete for which satisfy the safety case requirements. Key to this is our nuclear safety culture which ensures we understand the importance of the nuclear concrete within the overall long-term operation of a nuclear plant. We can work with clients in advance of any construction to source the right constituents' materials, offering long term sustainable supplies, and develop mix solutions which provide the right performance criteria for the plant. We can then provide ongoing support including the establishment and operation of concrete batching plants on site.

A low carbon logistics offer to minimise impacts

Tarmac logistics is helping to lead the development of zero emission delivery solutions for vital construction materials. From our introduction of the UK's first battery electric concrete mixer in 2022 to the recent announcement of Tarmac's involvement in the UK Government's Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator Programme we are actively developing the technical solutions and knowledge for zero emission delivery at scale.

Battery electric construction materials delivery in our urban areas improves, not just air quality, but also reduces noise pollution which has been shown to be a major cause of stress related health issues. Tarmac's approach is to learn from first-of-a-kind demonstrators, improve the technical solutions where we can, and identify the levers necessary for effective scaling.

We can provide complete logistical supply solutions by road, rail and sea, which recognise the challenges associated with delivery to nuclear construction programs, minimising impacts on local communities and whilst also providing low carbon options. We provide our customers with assurances of supply so as not to interrupt construction programs through the resilience the Tarmac business offers.

Delivering a social value legacy

A new generation of UK nuclear reactors is essential to our energy needs. These projects also have the once in a generation potential to bring prosperity to regions and to change lives for the better.

We understand the active role we can play in building lasting community relationships, achieving net positive environmental outcomes and strengthening local economies to enable them to thrive.

Our social value programme for nuclear projects are carefully informed by the ESG ambitions of clients and always designed to meet the individual local needs of regions where we’re working.

Our programmes are built on four pillars which are aligned and tailored to the needs of people and places.

Our nuclear safety culture

We understand that nuclear safety goes beyond even the rigorous demands of everyday health and safety. It is about consistently getting every aspect that could impact delivery and safety right every time.

Nuclear safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we achieve this unfailingly by complying with internal procedures and manufacturing specifications at all times.

Our safety culture, founded on open communication and challenge, respect and diligence drives the delivery of commitments of right first time.

This principle is embedded through a nuclear safety culture philosophy, which ensures the performance expectations of our supply are understood at every level from quarry to site. With an underpinning quality culture which provides the appropriate checks to provide demonstrable and auditable records for our supply.

Supporting major project delivery

Tarmac has a leading commercial team which has helped to deliver some of the UK’s most complex and demanding infrastructure projects including, the PPP program at Sellafield, HS2, Thames Tideway Tunnel and Whitelee Wind Farm.

Combined with our industrial asset base, innovative solutions and unrivalled freight network,
this makes us a critical delivery partner for the UK nuclear industry.
