Ultibed Trenchfill
Soil binder for trench reinstatement and utility street works
Ultibed Trenchfill is a soil binder that enables soil from utility trench excavation to be used as a structural reinstatement material. The resulting material has three times greater strength than traditional methods like Type 1 aggregate and will create significant cost savings along with operational and sustainability benefits.
Ultibed Trenchfill meets the requirements of the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH) Appendix A9 covering Alternative Reinstatement Materials. As it enables hazardous materials like tar bound planings to be safely re-used as a trench fill material.
The Environment Agency’s Definition of Waste (DoW) Service has confirmed that, where excavated materials are treated for immediate, compliant reuse using Ultibed Trenchfill SMR, they are not classified as waste under the latest SWUK Protocol (October 2025). This means that it avoids the compliance issues associated with new waste disposal protocols.
Ultibed Trenchfill can be used with Tarmac's packed cold lay asphalts like Ultipatch Footway, for high quality, long lasting reinstatements.

Where can Ultibed Trenchfill be used?
Recycling soil from utility street works
Ultibed Trenchfill allows soil from trench excavation to be processes on site and used as a structural reinstatement material. This enables responsible recycling of site waste.
Soil binder for bedding flagstones and block pavers
Ultibed Trenchfill can also be used as a stable, structural base for installation of flagstones, paving slabs and block pavers.
Soil binder for road or footpath reinstatement
As an alternative reinstatement material, Ultibed Trenchfill can be used as a combined sub-base and binder course reducing the asphalt layer by 50%. It meets the requirements of the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH) Appendix A9 covering Alternative Reinstatement Materials.
Structural material for utility reinstatement
Utility contractors can turn soil from trench excavation into a stabilised base material to use in lower layers of the reinstatement. This offers a more sustainable approach to utility reinstatement.
